What do I wear during a spa service?

At all times the customer's comfort comes first. Depending on the service, you will be offered a gown or to simply wear you under garments.

Do I wear my underwear during a massage?

We leave this decision to the customer. However, at no time during a massage are you exposed to the therapist. Example: If the LMT is massaging your leg, the blanket/sheet is folded away from that leg only. When that leg is done it is covered and the LMT moves on the next area.

How long should the hair be prior to waxing?

In order for the wax to adhere the hair should be ¼ inch long. Usually 5-6 weeks between services is appropriate. If the hair is not long enough, the appointment will have to be canceled.

What is Aromatherapy?

Aromatherapy is the art of utilizing various plant scents to enhance relaxation.

How do I know what kind of Facial to get?

It is difficult to choose a facial, if it is your first time. The best approach is to schedule a basic facial such as Bilberry Soothing Facial or Aromatherapy Facial, and the technician will consult with you on your skin and customize the service to your needs.

How do I know what kind of massage to get?

If you're unsure which massage you're interested in, scheduling by the amount of time is the best approach. The LMT will consult you on what is best for you and customize the service each time.

Do I have to leave without any make-up on after my facial?

The Esthetician will offer a light make-up touch up before you leave the facial room so you will feel comfortable.

What are trigger points?

Trigger points are areas of hypersensitivity and are ischemic, meaning they have reduced blood flow. By applying pressure to a trigger point, we push out old metabolic waste and allow fresh blood and oxygen to permeate the muscle. This is like squeezing a saturated sponge so the sponge can have room to pick up more fluid.

Can I get a massage if I am pregnant?

Massage is helpful during pregnancy. Additional weight puts strain on back muscles and massage can help relieve discomfort. During he first trimester massage is good but some area of the body are avoided (no work around the sacrum). Licensed therapists are trained how to work to improve the mother's comfort level throughout all stags of pregnancy.

How do I tip?

Tipping is generally like tipping in a restaurant 15%-20%.

How far should I schedule my appointments in advance?

Customers are welcome to schedule one year in advance. Many Not So Plain Jane's customers have a particular time/day that works best for them. With a few strikes of the keyboard your year's worth of appointments can be made and a schedule printed out for you. If this is overwhelming to you, scheduling two appointments in advance is a good rule of thumb.

Do you have computer imaging?

We do not offer computer imaging. The reason for this is because the computer can not take into context the texture of your hair, your cowlicks, etc. Therefore it can be a misleading service.

Does semi-permanent color cover gray?

Semi-permanent color can not make your hair lighter and does not cover gray. It is designed to stain the outside of the hair and enhance, brighten or darken your natural color.

What is the difference between a cap hi-light and a foil hi-light?

With a foiling service the stylist has more control over the results of the hi-lights. The stylist can choose exactly where the color is applied and alternate colors in the hair. Foiling is also better for longer hair. A cap hi-light is for a one color hi-light, usually on shorter hair.

What is a low light?

A low light is the same process as a hi-light, the difference being the color applied is a darker color. Usually done when blondes become too blond or to blend gray with natural color.

How does well water affect my hair?

Your water in your home is critical to the color and condition of your hair. It is very important to let your stylist know if you have well water. Mineral deposits will change the color of your hair, build up on the hair and can cause negative results in your chemical service at the salon! There are methods we use to remove the well water deposits. Using a clarifying shampoo is a good place to start.

Why do I see professional salon products in drugs stores?

Many of you may have seen professional products in various retail stores. This is currently illegal and is considered "black market" product selling. Some retailers offer cash rewards for any information on how the products reach these retail stores. If you buy the products out of the retail stores the manufacturer will not stand by their guarantee of the quality of that product.

How often should I color or hi-light my hair?

This varies greatly depending on how much of a contrast there is between hi-lights and natural hair color, personal comfort zone on roots showing etc. Keep in mind that your hair grows, on average a ½ inch per month. In three months you will have a 1 ½ of your natural hair at the roots.

What is the difference between professional hair color and store bought color?

The first difference is quality. The condition of your hair is not good after a store bought color. The second difference is that store bought colors are mass-produced in a factory, in a salon stylist personally mix your customized color every time you come in. This means that at store bought color can be slightly different each time you purchase it. Keep in mind that the manufacture does not tell you when they change their product.

In a salon , it takes years for a stylist to learn all there is to know about hair color both chemically and in color theory. A stylist must know how the colors works with the pigment of your hair, how not to turn it green, or damage it beyond repair. The stylists at Not So Plain Jane's are continually attending educational classes to know exactly the latest techniques in hair color. All this information and experience can not be found on the back of a box.

What is the difference between professional and store bought hair care products?

Many of the products sold in the drugstore either leave a build up of waxy film on the hair or dry the hair out of it's natural oils.

Many people spend a lot of money and time on having their hair done professionally. Manufactures of professional products understand this. They spend millions of dollars in research on developing high quality products to fit the many different hair types of people, to maintain chemically treated hair, and provide the salon consumer with products that are used in high fashion

Can I color my hair and hi- light at the same time?

Absolutely! If you can not decide between the two, then you can do both. In fact many of the colors you see on the movie stars are more than one color.

Who is the best stylist?

The are different levels within the salon and these are determined not only by experience, but also by motivation level, meeting sales goals, client retention etc. Not So Plain Jane's is proud to have a team of stylist that is unbeatable. The stylists are well trained and work together as a team. If you wish to try someone different there are no hurt feelings, in fact we encourage our customers to meet everyone.

What is the difference between a trim and a hair cut?

There really is no difference. The same amount of time is allotted because it is the same amount of effort.

What are temporary tips for nails?

Temporary tips a tips that are glued on, buffed and polish. There is no acrylic or gel overlay. They last about a week and are perfect for that person who has a special occasion to go to, but doesn't want to commit to maintaining artificial nails.

How often should I have my nails done?

The best way to maintain your natural nail is to have a manicure every two to four weeks.

How often should I have a pedicure?

To keep your feet (which we continually abuse) in good condition you should have a pedicure every one to two months.
