What do I wear during a spa service?

The client's comfort comes first at all times. Depending on the service, you will be offered a gown or you may simply wear your undergarments.
Do I wear my underwear during a massage?

We leave this decision to the client. However, at no time during a massage are you exposed to the therapist.
Example: If the LMT (licensed message technician) is massaging your leg, the blanket/sheet is folded away from that leg only. When the massage on that leg is completed it is covered and the LMT moves on to the next area.
How long should the hair be prior to waxing?

In order for the wax to adhere, the hair should be ¾ inch long. Usually 5-6 weeks between services is appropriate. If the hair is not long enough, the appointment will have to be rescheduled.
How do I know what kind of Facial to get?

It is difficult to choose a facial if you have never had one before. The best approach is to schedule a basic facial such as the Not So Plain Jane's Customized Facial, and the technician will consult with you, evaluate your skin type and customize the service to your needs.
How do I know what kind of massage to get?

Schedule your appointment by the length of time you would like the massage to last. The LMT will consult with you and recommend an appropriate massage based upon your needs.
Do I have to leave without any makeup on after my facial?

The Esthetician will offer a light make-up touch up before you leave the facial room so you will feel comfortable.
What are trigger points?

Trigger points are areas of hypersensitivity and are ischemic, meaning they have reduced blood flow. By applying pressure to a trigger point, we push out old metabolic waste and allow fresh blood and oxygen to permeate the muscle. This is like squeezing a saturated sponge so the sponge can have room to pick up more fluid.
Can I get a massage if I am pregnant?

Massage is helpful during pregnancy. Additional weight puts strain on back muscles and massage can help relieve discomfort. During the first trimester massage is good, but some areas of the body are avoided (no work around the sacrum). LMTs are specially trained to work to improve a mother's comfort level throughout all stages of pregnancy.
What should I tip?

Gratuities are typically calculated at 15%-20% of the total service amount.
How far should I schedule my appointments in advance?

Customers are welcome to schedule one year in advance. Many Not So Plain Jane's customers have a particular time/day that works best for them. With a few strikes of the keyboard your year's worth of appointments can be made and a schedule printed out for you. If this is overwhelming to you, scheduling two appointments in advance is a good rule of thumb.
How does well water affect my hair?

Your water in your home is critical to the color and condition of your hair. It is very important to let your stylist know if you have well water. Mineral deposits will change the color of your hair, build up on the hair shaft, and can cause negative results in your chemical service at the salon. There are methods we use to remove well water deposits. Using a clarifying shampoo at least one a week at home is recommended for clients that use well water.
Why do I see professional salon products in drugs stores?

This is called diversion and is considered "black market" product selling. Some manufacturers offer cash rewards for any information on how the products reach these retail stores. If you buy the professional products at retail stores, manufacturers will not guarantee the quality of that product.
What is the difference between professional hair color and store bought color?

The first difference is quality. The condition of your hair is compromised after the application of store bought color. The second difference is that store bought colors are mass-produced in a factory. This means that store bought color can be slightly different each time you purchase it. In addition, the manufacturer does not tell notify the consumer when they change the chemical composition of their products.
In a salon, stylists personally mix your customized color every time you come in. It takes years for a stylist to learn all there is to know about hair color both chemically and in color theory. A stylist must know how the colors work with the pigment of your hair, how not to turn it green, or damage it beyond repair. The stylists at Not So Plain Jane's are continually attending educational classes to learn the latest techniques in hair color. All of this knowledge and experience cannot be found on the back of a box.
Who is the best stylist?

Not So Plain Jane's is proud to have a diverse, knowledgeable, team of stylists. All of the stylists are well trained and as part of their employment contract, must attend regular educational classes. Everyone works together as a team. If you wish to try someone different there are no hurt feelings; in fact we encourage our customers to meet everyone.
What is the difference between a trim and a hair cut?

There really is no difference. The same amount of time is allotted because it is the same amount of effort.
How often should I have a pedicure?

To keep your feet (which we continually abuse) in good condition, you should have a pedicure every one to two months.
How often should I have my nails done?

The best way to maintain your natural nail is to have a manicure every two to four weeks.
